Why I Do This Work

Nearly thirty years ago, I was the person people found in a college computer lab when something had to work and no one else knew how to fix it.

Not because it was my career plan. But when someone couldn't get their work to print at 9pm the night before finals, I was the one who could figure it out. Why? Because I liked figuring things out.

Here's what I didn't know then: I was actually studying criminal justice. I wanted to be an attorney. But nobody in my life told me that I should have majored in Political Science until it was too late. So, I went to where the paying work was — IT. But the fascination with the law never left. To this day, I'll drop everything for a good legal procedural. What draws me in is the same thing that draws me to I.T. & security work: watching someone build a case piece by piece, until nothing is left to guesswork.

For nearly three decades, I kept ending up as the go-to person. Different companies, different industries, different job titles. Same story: someone would show me a broken process, and I'd fix it — usually with tools we already had, in ways nobody had thought to try. Along the way I became an Information Security Analyst at a national organization, working in the discipline that matters most when the stakes are highest.

I started The Halo Technology Group because I got tired of watching tickets die in queues, weeks past the SLA due date. Support requests that everyone forgot about. The client who really needed help, getting lost and buried in the ticketing queue. I knew technology could be better than that. I knew the person on the other end deserved better than that.

So because of my unique background, I built HTG for solo and small-firm attorneys specifically because your work sits at the exact intersection of everything that fascinates me — the discipline of building a case, the weight of client confidentiality, the reality that a single technology failure can undo years of trust with a client. That's not an abstract problem to me. It's the kind of problem I've spent my whole career learning to solve.

When you work with me, you're not calling a help desk. You're calling the person who's going to answer the phone, take your problem seriously, and treat your practice like it's worth something. Because it is.

That's why I do this work.

The Halo Triage Method

A named process, not a guessing game — every issue goes through the same four steps.

A Halo Technology Group consultant diagnosing a client's tech issue

1. Triage

We figure out what's actually wrong, fast — instead of guessing or throwing fixes at the wall.

2. Investigate

We dig into the real cause, not just the symptom you happened to notice first.

3. Resolve

We fix it right the first time, and explain what happened in plain English — no jargon, no runaround.

4. Fortify

We put safeguards in place so the same problem — or a worse one — doesn't come back.

The Halo Partner Plan

You Don't Get a Checklist of Services. You Get a Partner.

When something breaks, you don't dig through a vendor directory or start a group chat with your paralegal trying to guess what's wrong. You call. I triage it, tell you the truth, and fix it.

✓  Ask me anything, anytime something's acting up
If your computer, email, or software is acting weird, reach out as many times as you need — there's no limit on questions or quick "is this normal?" check-ins. If something turns into a bigger job, like building a whole new system, I'll say so upfront and give you a separate price before starting, so you're never surprised by a bill.
✓  I check in with you once a month, even when nothing's broken
Every month we have a short call or video chat — usually 15 to 30 minutes — just to check in. We talk through anything that's been bugging you, anything coming up, and how your setup's doing overall. The goal is to catch small issues early, instead of only talking when something's already on fire.
✓  If it's urgent, I'm on it the same day
For true emergencies — you're locked out of your email or case files, you think you've been hacked, or your whole office loses internet — I respond and start working on it that same business day. "Same-day" means I jump on it right away, not that every problem gets fully wrapped up in an hour; some issues take longer to fix properly.
✓  I make sure your email and files aren't an easy target
I regularly look at how you're storing and sending client information and flag anything that looks risky — like a weak password habit or an email setting that leaves the door open. Think of it as a lock-checker for your digital office. It's not an official audit or a legal sign-off that you're "compliant" — for that, you'd still want your own attorney or compliance advisor — but it's a real, ongoing second set of eyes looking out for you.
✓  I'll tell you when it's time to upgrade — before it becomes a problem
Old computers and outdated software aren't just slow — they're often the reason things break or get hacked. I keep an eye on your setup and let you know when something's getting risky or past its useful life, and what I'd recommend instead. I don't get paid by any vendor to point you toward their product — the recommendation is just my honest read, and the final call and purchase are always yours.
✓  You always talk to me — never a call center
There's no support queue and no re-explaining your systems to a new person every time. You call or email me directly, and I already know your setup and history.

One serious data breach — the kind that starts with a single unpatched laptop or an unsecured inbox — could easily cost you far more than a year of this plan, before you count the damage to client trust.

Is This For You?

Let's Be Direct About Who This Is — and Isn't — For.

This Is for You If…

You're a solo or small-firm attorney who doesn't have — and doesn't want — an in-house IT department, but still needs someone who actually understands what's at stake with client data.

“Couldn't I Just Do This Myself?”

You probably could. You already have vendors — the software company, the phone system, maybe an IT person who set things up years ago. What you don't have — while running a law practice — is someone whose job is to notice when the settings drift, whether your client emails are actually secure, or when a “little issue” is actually the first sign of something bigger. Nearly 30 years of IT support and troubleshooting has taught me what to look for. That's the difference between having the tools and having someone who's seen what breaks and knows why.
